Ghost Tours

Thought I would suggest a fun activity for Halloween this year if you live near a big city...or an old city like Savannah, Salem, or St. Augustine. A variety of Ghost Tours can usually be found operating in many big or historical cities. We try to catch the Ghost Tours whenever we find them. Some tours are walking tours where you walk around the city with a guide who takes you to points of interest and tells you the history and legend of the ghosts that supposedly reside there. If you choose a walking tour, be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as a lot of walking is obviously involved. And pay attention to the weather and dress accordingly, as it can be hot, cold or rainy. Some cities have Trolleys that you can ride on for the Ghost Tours. These are my favorite type because I am inherently lazy and want to sit down while visiting the ghosts. We did one of these in Savannah, and it had a cast of costumed characters that helped animate the experience. One was the host who rode with you on the trolley, and the others were at the locations we stopped at along the way. Everyone would get off the trolley at the designated stops and watch a little skit, as well as hearing the stories of the ghosts. The trolley itself was an open air trolley which was nice, but it also had plastic sides that could be pulled down in the event of rain. And a third and somewhat macabre option, is to take a Ghost Tour in an old Hearse. Sometimes you sit inside the hearse and ride around like in the photo above, but the ones in Savannah had the roofs cut out and chairs were set up high so the people were looking down from atop the hearse. I thought these were very clever and added a certain spookiness to the adventure. Whichever type you choose...you won't be disappointed, as learning about the haunted history of a city is always entertaining. I snapped the pic above, 2 weekends ago in St. Augustine as we were driving by one of the Hearses, so it's not a great image, but it gives you the general idea. The riding tours generally cost a bit more than the walking tours, but being lazy is worth the extra money! :o)

I've always wanted to do this! When I lived in San Antonio, I intended to take one, as that is one of the most haunted cities in the USA! Never did though, which I really regret.
