Cirque du Freak

I wanted to give a head's up on a movie that is coming out next Friday, October 23rd that I can't wait to see. The movie is called "Cirque du Freak - The Vampire's Assistant". This summer my daughter read all the books in the Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan. She really loved this vampire saga after having just finished the Twilight series. I must admit that I myself have not read even one book in either of these two series. However, if I were going to choose one to read, it would definitely be the Cirque! And I think I do want to read them because my daughter has informed me that they would be right up my ally. I have to admit that I love the name and premise of the 'Freak Show' already. For some reason it brings to mind Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes". The movie is rated PG-13 so that all those young readers can get in to see it. And having it released right before Hallowe'en was a wonderful marketing strategy.

The basic synopsis of the movie is that a young boy named Darren, meets the mysterious Mr. Crep
sley at a freak show, who turns out to be a Vampire. After a series of events, the boy must leave his normal life and go on the road with the Cirque du Freak and become a Vampire. The books do not depict Vampires as evil creatures however, nor do they apply to them the normal stereotypes that we are so accustomed to seeing. In a more realistic take on the Vampire, they do not live forever, but rather they just age slowly. They can go into the sunlight, just not for long since they burn easily, and they don't bite to suck blood, but rather they slit a vein, drink just enough and then heal the wound with their saliva. The film adaptation has such notable actors as John C. Reilly playing Mr. Crepsley, Willem Defoe, Salma Hayek, Ken Watanabe and Jane Krakowski.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one and I am posting the trailer below to give you a little sneak peek...I think it looks really good. My daughter and her friends have expressed one disappointment already however, so take 'Tweenie Boppers' critiques for what they're worth. But apparently after having read the books, they felt that the person that was chosen to play the part of Mr. Crepsley should have been 'good looking' and they don't feel that John C. Reilly fits the bill. But I think that they have just been ruined by 'Twilight' vampires that dress in designer clothes, drive expensive sports car and sparkle in the sunlight. Plllleeeeaassseee! This movie will be a welcome respite from the Twilight hoopla, although not for long, as the next film"New Moon" will be hitting theaters in November....UGH!

Thanks for posting on this--hadn't heard of it.

Sounds a little like Bradbury's "Something Wicked..."--a plus!

My son read the books and really liked them. We might have to see this movie.

I saw the trailer for this a few weeks ago and I would like to see it. I have kind of a soft spot for vampire movies, and I'm kind of enjoying the 'comeback' they are having right now. Even if I don't like some of what's out there. I admit that I kinda want to see 'Twilight'. Although my vampire drama needs are probably already well met with 'True Blood'.

I will say that part of the reason that I am interested to see this is the very reason your daughter & her friend are complaining about. John C. Reilly as a vampire? Totally awesome! I'm completely on board with that. He's great in the trailer.

Yeah...I agree Belle, I like John C. Reilly too and think he'll be great. I guess it's always that way when you've read a book or series and you have created a vision of a character in your own mind, and then the movie version comes out and they look nothing like what you imagined. I can see how they might feel a bit disappointed in that. But that is why I want to encourage her to keep reading, because you get to use your own mind and imagination to form your vision. And most people rarely like the movie as much as they do the book anyway.

As for Twilight...all I can say is UGH! I did read some of the last book because I wanted to see how inappropriate it might be before I let her read it. I found the writing rather juvenile. (Stephen King bashed it too.) I didn't find the book to bad for her to read. But the movie, which I've been subjected to numerous times, is just not good to me. And I know a lot of Moms like it. I just didn't! I didn't like the characters of Edward or Bella. ESPECIALLY Bella...she was a whiny, pouty, angsty, helpless teenage victim type personality, and there was just NOTHING I could admire in her at all. But that is just my opinion. I prefer female leads who are smart, witty and strong. I think it sends a better message to young girls. But the tweens loved it...so there ya go!

Speaking of John C. Reilly...I'm watching him right now on Never Been Kissed! LOL

I've been seeing the previews for this movie pretty frequently and think it looks pretty good. I haven't read the books though.

I have to confess, I DO love the Twilight saga. I read it years ago, before the hoopla overtook it all...and I found it charming. I will say, though, that I agree with your assessment of Bella. She's not my favorite character either. I don't even like Kristen Stewart, the girl they chose to play her in the films. I'm pretty excited about New Moon. :D
