Salem or Bust

Salem is officially known as the Witch City...and for good reason. Historically, Salem Massachusettes is the famed site of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. In all, 19 men and women were convicted of praticing Witchcraft and faced death by hanging on Gallow's Hill. A grim fate indeed, but one that has evolved over time to give the city it's mystique and has served it well. Now people from all over the world fly off to Salem during the month of October just to be a part of all the witchy festivities. Today, there are actually REAL witches inhabiting Salem without fear for their very lives. Although they may have to worry about curses from competing Covens. Wiccan practictioners are a big part of Salem's tourism and economy. Diagon Alley of Harry Potter fame has nothing on Salem when it comes to Witch Shops. There is a bubbling cauldron of magick stores, witch supply shops, costume stores and the likes to choose from. You can purchase yourself a new Witch hat, or perhaps a love potion or crystal ball. You can find lovely Goth clothing, incense and a huge array of Halloween items with which to decorate your dungeon. Hands down, some of the best Halloween goodies to be had, anywhere.

And for lack of a better way to describe this sleepy little seaport town....I always say it looks just like Halloween Town. Cornstalks tied to the light poles, orange banners with Witches flying on their brooms, houses and storefronts decorated to the hilt with Jack O'Lanterns and orange lights. There is a chill in the air, the leaves are starting to turn colors and folks are milling about in sweaters, witch hats and scarves...ha! You can visit the Witch Museum, brave one of the many Haunted Houses, sit in on a live "Spell Casting" with a real Witch, or take a moonlit Graveyard tour just to name a few of the many bewitching and magickal things to do in Salem. But be sure to go in October when the enchantment is at its peak, because just like the colored leaves...when they're gone, so is the magick!

If you truly love Halloween, then you MUST go to Salem during October at least once in your life! It's an experience you'll remember fondly for the rest of days. And if you go...book hotels and plane tickets early. It is a popular Halloween destination and things fill up fast.

I have some witchy news...Marcus booked an overnight stay in Salem on October 25 for the P-clan! With it only being an hour away, how could we not go? I will take plenty of pictures. I truly wish I would be meeting you there again. Next year, I hope for certain, we will.

I remember reading Arthur Miller's Crucible in my teenage. Great piece of literature. I want to see Salem once in my lifetime, as it was at the center of such dark page of American history. Not sure if I will ever see it in October, but then again, I can't complaint, as I will celebrate most of my Halloween in spooky Old England.

Hi Guillaume...nice to meet you. And I highly encourage you to make the pilgrimage sometime if you can. And as for you Hilda...don't be rubbing it in! You don't even know how bummed I am about missing it this year. But next year we are back on!

Well, I just mentioned to Marc last week that I'd like to go...just him and I, but then the kids found out and were all bummed that we were going to go without them! So...the whole clan will be going. I just don't want them to be too scared to go inside somewhere and I miss out! It's all about me when it comes to Salem!!! Ha! I will be thinking of you though. I really wish you were venturing this way...

I would die to go to Salem for Halloween. Maybe someday in my lifetime!

Aw Kim...with your love of Halloween, and the fantabulous creations you make...you JUST HAVE to make it there. You would be in your glory. I thought I'd never make it to New England in the fall at one point in my life. Then my husband said...come on let's do it. It's nothing more than a plane ticket, a hotel and a car. Let's make it happen....so we did. And we've gone back every year since with the exception of this year. Although I am REALLY getting the itch BAD now...ha!

One day, perhaps when the kiddos are a tad bit older, I'll make this trip! I've always wanted to go to a place so deeply marinated in the spooky juices of the Halloween season! I love the fact that this town has taken a horrible chapter of their history and turned it into something wonderful. THAT is true magick!
