Commune with the Spirits!

It's that SPOOKY time of year again....the perfect time to commune with the SPIRITS!  And I'm not just talking apparitions here.....I'm talking about the SPIRITS you pour into your glass!  Gone are the days of those banal bottles and boring booze....as something far more WICKED, this way comes!  Check out these frighteningly fabulous finds, certain to 'Raise the Dead' at this year's Halloween Bash! Best of all....when the bottle runs dry, just wash it out and add it to your Halloween Decor.  I'd be first in line to buy one of each, except for one small problem....I can't seem to find anywhere that these diabolical beauties are actually sold!  So what gives?  Are they real products, or just superbly sinister graphic campaigns? The Legend of the Frozen Ghost

This is a story of people whose names are lost to time, set in a location which is a sworn secret, for reasons that will become clear at the end of this tale.
Generations ago, a family in Western Canada had a proud but small farm. They raised crops and livestock so plentifully, they outproduced all the other farms in the colony. Soon, people began to realize that the spring that watered their land was the sweetest and purest in the area and was thought to be the source of their success.

A jealous neighbor schemed to divert their water to his own property. Stealing onto their land one bitterly cold winter night, he was confronted by the farm’s owner, known only as Tobias. The neighbor struck him with his shovel, knocking him unconscious into a pond near the mouth of the spring. The water thief completed his work, diverting some of the spring’s output to his property by means of the underground channel he dug.

Tobias’s body was later discovered in the ice that froze the pond deep on that frigid winter night.
No one knew how he died. The secret was safe until the neighbor began to report a strange presence of Tobias that haunted his every step. A presence that ultimately drove him mad. He confessed everything as he was driven in a prison cart to the colony’s sanitarium.

Halloween Hits the World Market

So new this week here in Florida...World Market finally started getting in their Day of the Dead and Halloween Merchandise....woo hoo!  I snapped a few shots, but not all the shelves were stocked completely yet. I loved these grinning Jack O'Lantern Gourd wind chimes.  Seeing them hanging there in one giddy lil' grinning group made me oh so Halloween Happy!  

World Market also has a nice selection of Dia de los Muertos items.  I especially liked the Skeleton Cats and Skeleton Owls which were new.  I picked up a black and white Sugar Skull Head plate.  And almost bought a Sugar Skull Stress Ball because lets face it...who doesn't have stress and couldn't use an item like that every so often?!

And they also had a cute selection of Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein Movie melamine plates and serving platters that were Monsteriffic too!  

Another bonus to World Market is that they have a great selection of just about every Autumn/Halloween Beer, Hard Cider, and Wine known to man.  So if you'd like to sample one, before committing to the whole case......just pick up an empty 6-pack bottle holder, and fill it with single bottles of beer in every Pumpkin-y, Autumn-y flavor that tickles your fancy, it's that easy.  Then just take it back to your place with some Pumpkin Chips and Salsa....and you're all set to host your own lil' Beer Tasting or Mini Octoberfest in the comfort of your own home. 

There were lots of other good finds that I would have photographed and shared at World Market, but the employees who were stocking the shelves kept watching me with a suspicious eye as though I might actually make out the door with a Skeleton or bag of Chocolate Monster Eyeballs...so I decided to put the camera away, make my purchases and leave.  But it is definitely worth checking out if you have one in your area!

And So It Begins...the Pumpkin is Back!

And so it begins....bring on the Autumn Season!
What a most wickedly wonderful surprise I woke up to this morning, thanks to my dear hubby!  I opened the refrigerator doors to discover the First Pumpkin Goodies of the Halloween Season.  Bye-bye sugar-free Hazelnut coffee creamer...you have officially been replaced until further notice by a brand new fat-free/sugar-free Pumpkin Pie Spice Coffee Creamer by International Delight!  In the past I've always used Coffee Mate sugar-free Pumpkin Spice creamer because it's the only Pumpkin flavored one we could find that was also sugar-free.  But this year International Delight has stepped up its game and actually beat Coffee Mate to the grocery store...at least with the sugar-free version.  And as I sit here typing, and sipping from my Owl mug, I can attest to its Pumpkin Pie Tastiness! 

And as if that man didn't already score enough brownie points with me today...my new creamer was flanked with Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Yogurt - Light, from Yoplait!  How cool is that?!  I have not sampled the yogurt yet, so I can't report on its tastiness as of this writing, but truly how bad can anything with a lil' pumpkin in it really be?!  I am super excited to give this stuff a try, and plan on doing just that at lunch today, but the more important point of today's post is that it is officially The Season of the Autumn People....at least in the grocery stores....woo hoo!  I should also mention that the hubster also brought home a bag of Pepperidge Farms Pumpkin Cheesecake Cookies the other day too, in case anyone is interested in checking them out. I was skeptical at first, but they were moist and soft and quite yummy...however there are only 8 cookies in the bag and with 5 people clamoring to try them....the whole bag was decimated within about 5 minutes!  Hence, why there is no photo evidence of it's existence!  All the more reason to go buy some more!  Would love to know what the rest of you are finding in your area grocers...so please be sure to post! 

What Color Is Absinthe?

So today we are heading up to Burlington VT for the Giant Pumpkin Boat Regatta & Harvest Festival! I'll be posting on some of the fun Fall things we've been doing when I return home. But today I'm thinking about Absinthe. Particularly, its COLOR! Have any of you actually tried this beverage before? And if so, what did you think? Was it delightful or dreadful...and did you fly with the 'Green Faerie'? I find this Anise flavored liquor, made from 'Wormwood' to be rather intriguing myself. Perhaps it's that fabulous Chartreuse-y Emerald Green color, or the fact that it's made with the ever so bitter 'witchy' wormwood herb. It could be the pomp and circumstance in the very art of drinking it properly, with slatted spoons and burnt sugar. In fact, it became so popular in Europe that the 'Green Hour' came into fashion, where folks would frequent the bars to imbibe in the magical elixir between 5-7pm.
Perhaps it's the drink's dark side that I find intriguing....when acts of violence followed Absinthe binges, and the drink became known as "The Devil's Brew"! In fact, a whole resistance movement in Europe and North America sprang up to ban this evil 'Drink of the Devil'. The wormwood was rumored to have hallucinogenic properties. There was even the infamous "Absinthe Murders" in Sweden where a man killed his entire family after a night of Absinthe drinking. Indeed, the march to ban it was successful in America in 1912 and remained in effect for nearly 100 years.

There are many things to like about a drink with a lurid past don't you think? But I think maybe it's because it was the drink of choice for the Bohemian Artists and Writers of yesteryear, such as Van Gogh, Picasso and Oscar Wilde. Did it expand their creative vision, and if so, in what ways? Or did it simply intoxicate them into a state of madness and debauchery?! There is much Absinthe lore that is "shrouded in the mists of time". And anything with an air of mystery peaks my curiosity.

So What Color IS Absinthe anyway? That one is pretty easy, and I doubt many people would envision it as anything other than Green. But since it's Hallowe'en, I thought it might be nice to have some 'Absinthe Pumpkins'....or should we call them 'Verdant Gourds'? So what do you say? Shall we all be 'Absinthe Minded' today? :o)

Surprise Halloween Goodies

Oh what a glorious 'Hotter than Hades' Fall day this is! Never mind that it actually feels exactly like summer..... because I march on to the beat of my own drum, pretending very hard in my wicked little heart of hearts, verdantly fertile imagination, and 'self-preservational delusion' .....that it's really cool and crisp and perfectly Autumn delicious here! Ahhhh....
('Self-Preservational Delusion' is a new clinical term I've created from my self diagnosis....please enter it into your medical dictionaries at this time!) So yes....I realize that it's a sad, pathetic existence to have to 'pretend' the change of seasons, but an "Autumn Girl" from Florida has to do what an "Autumn Girl" has to do.....to get her Autumn On!!! And for me that means turning the air down cold and staying indoors amid all my Halloween/Fall decorations and counting down the days until I head to New England!

In the meantime, I am thrilled to report that that 'man o' mine' scored himself some major 'pumpkin brownie points' this morning. Yes, I awoke to find some Fall treats waiting for discovery in my fridge. My very first container of Pumpkin Spice Creamer for my Coffee....woo hoo! (I can officially report that it was quite tasty!) And as if that weren't enough, there were also 3 assorted packs of Halloween Cookies ready for the baking! Hooray! I just love how he aids and abets me in my semi-dysfunctional and seemingly insatiable need for continuous Autumnal stimulation and reinforcement! :o)

Zombies and Coffee

Isn't that a cute Zombie image? Okay, I will get to Zombies momentarily, but first things first. I can now officially report that my Pumpkin Spice Chocolate Truffle Cinnamon Vanilla Nut Witch's Brew Coffee was positively delightful, and went perfectly with my new Fall/Halloween magazines. (Boy, what a mouthful that name is huh? HA...get it?.....Mouthful.....Coffee.....mouthful of coffee.....hee hee......yeah okay, moving on.) So anyway....for anyone interested in the 'Secret Recipe' for my Witch's Brew Coffee.....well too bad, it's a secret! Ha....just teasing! Actually it's any brand you can find of Pumpkin flavored coffee, along with Folger's Gourmet Collection Chocolate Truffle Coffee, and Archer Farms brand Cinnamon Vanilla Nut Coffee from Target. I realize this is 3 separate bags of Coffee, but it does last a lot longer than just one.
SO.....to make 4 cups I use 2 heaping Tbsp. of Chocolate Truffle, 1 heaping Tbsp. of Cinnamon Vanilla Nut and 1 Tbsp. of Pumpkin Spice all mixed together in the coffee filter. I like this ratio because any more Pumpkin is too 'Pumpkiny' for my taste, any less Chocolate would not be 'Chocolatey' enough for my taste, and the Cinnamon Vanilla Nut just brings it all together. And once it's brewed, I add 2 packets of Splenda and 2 Tbsp. of Coffee Mate Sugar Free Hazelnut Creamer. (Be sure to use Coffee Mate Pumpkin Creamer when it's seasonally available.) I consider this to be one 'Tasty Cup of Autumn Yumminess'! But what makes it even more wonderful is that this scrumptious concoction has almost no calories and no carbs, but does have plenty of Caffeine to wake my sleepy butt up in the morning! Ahhh....so grateful for the small pleasures in life! :o)
Okay, so I know I've been saying that I am not a 'blood, guts and gore' kind of gal when it comes to my Halloween tastes....but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate a good Zombie every now and then. So my kids watch this show on the Disney Channel called "So Random", where the young actors do a variety of different comedy skits. And I just had to share my favorite skit on the show with you, because Halloween lovers are usually the first to appreciate things like Zombies and Ghosts....even in a juvenile show such as this. The skit is called "Zombie Man", and the premise of it is that one of the kids in the high school class is a Zombie who eats his class mates. Sounds tasty so far doesn't it? (pun intended, har har)But Zombie Man does have one friend at school, and together they tackle the standard teen problems such as finding a date to the dance, and getting good grades on their tests. I just love the kid who plays the Zombie because even though he is devouring his classmates, he still manages to come off sweet and innocent. And yes, I realize that I'm easily amused by juvenile things.....but for some reason this makes me smile. Maybe it will make you smile too....and if not....well then go drink some more coffee until it does! :o)

Dreaming of Pumpkin

Pumpkin Spice....on Ice is Nice!

Okay...so I know there are those of you out there who have already reported on the return of the Great Pumpkin.....Spiced Latte from Starbucks, that is! And that is reason enough to do a happy dance in my book. But, I've never actually had a 'Latte' before. In fact, I had to ask the barista at Starbucks to explain it to me. Hmmm.....does sound pretty tasty I'll admit, but.... I am a Frappucino girl! Maybe it's because in Florida, it's always so hot that Frappucinos can be consumed year round. But all I know is that I like what I like, so here is what I order. And I would like to recommend this personal recipe to anyone who enjoys the seasonal flavors of the pumpkin spice, but would like it in something more akin to a dessert. Here is the recipe to use when ordering....
Order a Pumpkin-Spice Mocha Frappucino with an extra shot of mocha. I order mine with light whip only because it makes me just a tad less guilty about the gazillion calories I am consuming. And light whip just means 'less', not actually light. But the finishing touches are what really makes the drink. Ask to have chocolate syrup drizzled over the top then sprinkled with cinnamon and mocha powder. They never give me enough mocha powder, so I always take my drink to the side bar, open it up and sprinkle on some more. Then put back on your plastic top if you can actually manage it, because often times it's a real pain if anything has spilled over the edges. Then sit back and consume the most wonderfully delicious Autumn concoction you've ever had. The extra mocha helps the pumpkin-spice not be so overpowering and the combination is to die for....muwahahaha! My children loved it so much that they got decaffeinated versions too. We just got the first ones of the season last weekend and they are already hitting me up for more. If you try it out....let me know what you think! :o)

Pumpkin Spice Coffee

Tonight I stopped by Home Goods again and would you believe that a LOT of the stuff that was there just 2-3 days ago was already gone and some completely new and different stuff was now on the shelves. All of the venetian masks had been snatched up already. Glad I got mine when I did. I also got myself some Pumpkin Spice Coffee...yum yum!

Did I mention that I just started drinking coffee a few weeks ago? I've always liked the taste of it as long it has lots of sugar and creamer in it. But I've just never really felt the urge to drink coffee in the mornings since I usually get my caffeine fix by drinking Diet Mountain Dew. And during the day time it just seems too hot for the stuff. But my daughter and I have been on a Gilmore Girls marathon this summer and because they live in Connecticut on that show, where it's cold...they drink a lot of coffee. So I decided to buy a coffee pot and start drinking coffee too. Hey, it's never too late in life to pick up a bad habit right? Ha!So my coffee of choice since I am a light weight....is Chocolate Truffle mixed with Vanilla Cinnamon and topped off with sugar free Hazelnut creamer. It's quite tasty and since technically I am consuming about 4 cups...it does a nice job of waking me up. I say technically because I have a big coffee mug and I drink 2 cups total, but apparently my coffee mug holds 2 cups at a time, so after 2 cups, I've actually consumed 4...does that make sense?
Anyway, I found the pumpkin coffee and I was stoked...I will now attempt to mix the pumpkin and chocolate coffees and see what I can come up with. Sounds more like dessert doesn't it? And now I just found Pumpkin Spice Creamer on-line as well. Sounds delicious, but I think it is only seasonal, so we'll see if it becomes available. For those of you who are more industrious and handy in the kitchen, you can try the following recipe for "Pumpkin Spice Mocha". It sounds quite yummy and seems relatively easy to make. And for those of us longing for it to be Fall...imbibing in the flavors of Fall will at least make it taste as if Fall is on it's way! Now if only I could figure out how to make these wonderful Halloween themed Coffee designs! :o) The recipe is as follows:

Pumpkin Spice Mocha

Makes one 6-8 oz cup.
Adjust the spice to your tastes.

2/3 cup coffee

1/3 cup milk

1 1/2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tbsp sugar

1/4 - 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice*

*Pumpkin Pie Spice

1/4 cup ground cinnamon

2 tbsp ground ginger

2 tsp ground cloves

2 tsp ground nutmeg

Combine all ingredients in a small jar and shake to combine thoroughly.
Store covered.

Trick or Treating for Beer

Having majored in Advertising/Public Relations in college...it should be no surprise that I love cool ads that capture the attention. And being such a Halloween lover means that I especially love ads that utilize all the the great colors and icons of Halloween. And although some folks may not normally associate Beer with Halloween....I kind of do in a way and I'll expound in a minute. But these terrifyingly terrific Heineken Beer Ads really hit the mark for me personally. I also realize that these may not be new for some of you, but when it's the first time I see something for myself, and it's even remotely spooky or Halloween related...I post on it.

So why would I associate Beer with Halloween anyway? Well I can personally attest to having neighbors that pull their kids' Radio Flyer wagons around with them as they accompany their little devilish darlings door to door on Halloween night. And the Dad's aren't pulling them so their offspring will have a place to rest when their tootsies get tired. No, these wagons are filled up with ice and cold bottles of beer. I think it's only fair that the adults should get to enjoy the evening as well don't you?

In fact, the last few years, our neighbor 2 doors down, set up shoppe in his driveway. On a table was the obligatory big bowl of candy for the Trick or Treaters, and on the ground next to him was a keg of Beer and a stack of Dixie Cups. He gleefully gave out cups of Beer to all the adults as they came by with the youngsters. Now keep in mind that we do know this fella and his wife and kids, so we knew for certain that he was not just some strange evil man with a plan to poison the entire neighborhood. And besides, he tipsily rationed them out like this...."one for you, two for me". Ha...so we could be fairly sure he would have already succumbed to his own drunken madness if his intentions were anything less than honorable.

Of course I wouldn't encourage accepting Beer in Dixie cups from men in their driveways, anymore than I'd suggest taking candy from strangers. But then again....on Halloween we all seem to take leave of our senses...so interacting with masked strangers in any capacity seems fair game on Halloween night! And you gotta admit, that beer makes Trick or Treating a lot more fun for us all!

(Oh and in case anyone may have had this thought....there were NO alcoholic beverages being served to any minors...AT ALL! What kind of monsters do you think we are anyway?)

Well Hallowe'en is officially everywhere, as well it should be. And lots of stores are getting in on the seasonal action. One of my favorite on-ling/catalog stores is The Gooseberry Patch. They specialize in items that are food related, old, retro, country, vintage etc. And here are a few of their Hallowe'en offerings. You'll notice the use of vintage Hallowe'en graphics on some of their products like those fab boxes and the mixing bowl. The Crystal Skull

I want to give a shout-out to a fellow blogger who puts the SPOOK in spooktacular. Chris Davis is the author of the blog 'Frog on the Pumpkin'. And she is one half of the devilishly dynamic husband and wife duo who are 'Davis GraveYard'. Be sure to check them out, their work is top notch. But I just wanted to thank her for a post she did that lead to one of my favorite birthday gifts this past August...Dan Ackroyd's mystically fantastic Crystal Skull that is filled with Pure Spirit, Triple Crystal Filtered Vodka.

Martha Madness

Well, it appears that your good friend and mine....the ever clever Martha Stewart....is slowly taking over Hallowe'en. Let's face it...the lady is as smart as she is crafty, and she knows a good opportunity to cash in, when she sees one. Yep, Hallowe'en is the best insider tip she's gotten thus far, and the holiday is hot, hot, hot! Second only to Christmas in sales and swiftly catching up. And honestly, Martha can do Hallowe'en like nobody's business. I for one, look forward to her Hallowe'en magazine all year long and can't wait to see what goodies she sends to Michael's stores for the season.
But to me, she really seems to excel at the paper products and stationary and party supply kind of things. (And YES, I do realize that Martha is not actually my friend, (though she should be)...... and that all those fab ideas don't come from Martha herself, but rather from those uber talented designers that she has chained up in the basement of her office building, doing all her evil bidding.) And believe you me, I wish to the Great Pumpkin that I was one of them.....second only, to being an Imagineer at Disney World.
So I wandered onto Grandin Road's website, into their Hallowe'en Haven, and lo and behold, I find Martha in all her evilness, sneering from the page. And I wonder why Countess Martha is hanging out there in the Halloween section. Then I quickly notice it's because she is hawking her Hallowe'en wares....that's why! And the 'Martha Madness' ensues!That cunning little minx has been busy brewing up her 'Martha Magic' and spreading her 'brand' across the land. First K-mart, then Michael's...now Grandin Road. From a $150 glittered skeleton, to some mondo fab invitations and labels, to a nifty pumpkin clock....she has officially begun her campaign to become the Queen of Hallowe'en! And of course to get a heck of a lot richer in the process. And although I do love most of Martha's Hallowe'en merchandise, especially paper goods...I still don't know if she can beat Bethany Lowe in the Hallowe'en department....but that is just one good witch's humble opinion, and I adore her. The Halloween Season just would not be complete without Jones Soda. With names like Gruesome Grape, Spider Cider and Berried Alive...you know they have to be 'Fangtastic'! Being a photographer, I always love the photos on the packaging of course! Gruesome Grape for me please!

Wytch's Brew

Thought I'd share some tasty brew with you! No, not witch's brew...but something equally festive for your Halloween celebration. Last year we found some super fab specialty Ales just perfect for Halloween. First up is Pumpkin Ale, and like the name implies...there is actually a hint of pumpkin and spice to this beer which is rather nice. And The Headless Horseman gracing the label...makes this ale frightfully delightful. Also available is a dark ale called HobGoblin and a pale ale called Scarecrow. The Scarecrow label is a real hoot with an owl perched on the arm of the scarecrow. And these last two were brewed at the "Wytchwood Brewery" of course. Get it? Wytche....Witch.....oh so clever. Anyway, did I mention how festive these bottles look sitting in your kitchen or in a bucket of ice at the party?! I kept these 3 bottles unopened from last year just so I could put them out in the kitchen. So drink up me hardies....yo ho!
