Gruesomes Meet the Grinch Who Dissed Halloween

This fabulous piece of art belongs to © Jason Chalker.

Okay...so I spot the word Halloween in a link on my MSN homepage and of course I click on it. The link however, takes me to an article that really irked me. This is an article written just a couple of days ago by Jeremy Greenberg who has taken to the blog-o-sphere for 'The Family Room,' to rail against Halloween lovers who dare have the audacity to put their Halloween decorations up by October 1st. And the premise of his post is this...."

"Your paper-mache tarantula is an act of suburban aggression!"

You must read the full article here, it's not too long.
And read the comments too.

My first thought was that the guy who wrote this piece was a total jerk, who fancies himself the arbiter of proper holiday etiquette for all. A guy who obviously thinks his personal preferences should dictate how others think, feel and respond to the Halloween Holiday. And no, I am not saying that he doesn't have the right to his opinion...that's not the point of my post. Instead, I've spent the last couple of days trying to determine if I thought there was any real merit to his words....have I been unknowingly violating some Halloween code of ethics that I was unaware of? But he had the audacity to say that the "Halloween decorations shouldn't be brought out until any sooner than a week before, and taken down the next day." As well as this little gem, "Plus, let’s not ignore what’s really going on here: putting too many Halloween decorations up way too soon is an act of aggression towards the neighborhood."

Steam was starting to trickle out of my ears and my head was spinning, when all of a sudden I began to wonder....I wondered if it was I who had grown delusional and all alone on my own lil' Halloween planet. I mean, I hang out here in the blog-o-sphere with other Halloween Heads just like myself. Of course WE all LOVE Halloween. Of course we see nothing odd about decorating early...heck that's when the stores actually have the best product. And it doesn't last long before they've overloaded the shelves with Christmas items, so you have to start early.

But maybe, just maybe....I somehow failed to realize that we are really just an odd little band of Halloween misfits here, who exercise poor judgement and an apparent lack of taste and decorum. We obliviously go forth and decorate far too early, thereby searing the corneas of our fellow neighbors who are all snickering and jeering behind our backs. Could this be the truthful reality of which I had somehow lost touch?????

It was sitting there in the back of my mind as we put some of our yard decorations out this weekend. And I found myself watching every car that drove by for any signs that the driver was in some way offended, or 'put out' with the 'Gruesomes' who live on the hill, decorating for Halloween too early again. But I don't think that is the case. We usually get comments, and by that I mean enthusiastic compliments, on our apothecary, graveyard and 10 ft. scarecrow. And I might add that we were NOT the first ones to put our Halloween decorations in the yard this year either.

And I'll admit that I've been on the receiving end of disdainful looks from a few relatives who don't understand our love for the holiday, or the skull on the hitch of my SUV whose eyes light up red whenever I break. And there's the inevitable eye-rolling of other shoppers who watch as I unload my basket full of Halloween items onto the counter in August. But I also have worked hard to instill the fun, excitement and joy of my favorite holiday and season into my kids and those friends and family members who haven't lost touch with their youthful exuberance. My neighbors think our house at Halloween is the most spooktacular place to be. My joy and excitement has been contagious to those around me, not assaulting!

So I think that guy needs to re-think his position on the whole matter. In fact, curious if anyone else agreed with him, I scrolled down to the comment section and was relieved and thrilled to see that the Halloween lovers were coming out in force to reprimand him for being so haughty and narrow minded. And it wasn't just Halloween lovers and parents with kids...but there were comments from those whose kids had grown up and moved on also. And comments from those who aren't even big Halloween fans, but were defending the right of individuals to have different likes, and above all, the right to just chill out and HAVE FUN! So Gruesomes of the world...go forth and decorate...and hold your heads high!

* * And for those of you wondering where I dug the Gruesomes up at....my family and I watched The Gruesomes / Flintstones last night on a VHS cassette that I found in a rack of Halloween videos at a Burlington Coat Factory last year while vacationing in New England. This was the first time we'd actually opened it and viewed it since we bought it. And as I was watching it, thinking how 'disgustingly wonderful' those Gruesomes were, I began to wonder if perhaps my own neighbors view US as their Gruesomes...ha! But on the flip side, when you watch the full episode you'll see that the Gruesomes think that it's all the other neighbors who are the weird ones, not them! Guess it's just a matter of perspective. Anyway, I just felt a strong camaraderie with the Gruesomes and decided to blog about it. :o)

There's too much hating of *everything* going on these days, and everyone voicing their opinion on what they hate.

If ten people drive by and turn up their nose at our yard haunts, but one Halloween lover, especially a child, is inspired by it and dreams of making their own one day, we're completely right to put it up whenever we're ready - and you know that happens!

I think most yard haunters don't give a rat's ass about what their neighbors think anyway.

All my opinion...

On the other hand, yard haunters can be pretty hateful, too - I have been reading blogs where haunters dismiss inflatables ( which I think are pretty awful, but to each his own, as long as they're happy and getting in the spirit ) and severely hating on "Trunk or Treat" candy giveaways, so it isn't just the non-halloweenies who hate.

We have neighborhoods in towns close to me here where no one could safely walk their kid down a street, so those people bring their kids to a safe get-together, but the level of anger toward anything and everything these days makes some people "hate" the very idea of it.

Wish I could say that "holidays" bring people closer together, but the opposite is true these days.

Hey Wendy,

Good post. I couldn't agree more, seeing as we're already halfway through decorating our house for Halloween. :)

FYI, I don't mind you using my painting for your post, but would you mind linking it to my blog or Flickr?

Cheers,
Jason

(Sorry, I would've e-mailed you, but you don't have an e-mail link on your blog)

Hi Jason...Absolutely, I'd love to credit the creator of this fab art piece. When I went searching for images of The Gruesomes, I clicked on a page that had lots of images of them, the Flintstones and of video covers etc. Then when I clicked on the image, it opened up in another browser window but there was no artist information in either place, and I couldn't read your signature on the image I found. I noticed it looked different from the stills of the show, so I thought it must have been the original concept art the show was based on...ha!

I did not find this on your Flickr or I honestly probably never would have have used it. But I am more than thrilled to credit you and link to all your sites, or I'll remove it if you'd prefer too. Your art is terrific and should be seen. I actually like your version even better than the originals. And I'll look back through my history and see if I can find the page where I found it so you can be sure to get credit there as well! :o)

I agree with Dio. It is too bad that it seems more and more people deal with others like they are waiting for them to screw up or say the wrong things so they can jump down their throat. When we moved in to our place no one had anything out for Halloween, now ours is more the subtle one or kid favourite one and the rest have gone full scare. I love what we started. We have over 120 visitors every Halloween. I, too, had forgotten about Gruesomes. I loved those episodes!

Yes, many people don't understand us Halloween afficionados. And that is a shame, as it is a great holiday, which works on so many levels.

There's always one. Act of aggression? That's a bit extreme. But he has as much right to voice his opinion on the matter as we have to decorate when we want. Whatever floats your boat or finds your lost remote is what I say!

I can't believe you dug up the Gruesomes...I completely forgot about them!

All I can say to Mr. Greenberg is, "Get A Life!".
We have as much a right to put our decorations up a month before Halloween as those who begin decorating for Christmas at Thanksgiving.
We have never had any negative comments or feedback from neighbors or people who pass by regarding our Halloween decorations. In fact, we've only received words of encouragement.
Maybe Mr. Greenberg was deprived of trick-or-treating as a child.....

I, too, had forgotten about the Gruesomes! They're so creepily cool! :0)

Halloween Heads......kinda like the term. :0)

Sounds like someone had a mommy who never let him celebrate Halloween the way it should be with all the gruesome twosomes so now "it's my party and I'll cry if I want to" attitude...The Great Pumpkin will come for him ;)

We should never worry about what will the neighbors think. They should worry when you still have your Halloween decorations up at Christmas LOL.

Well I totally agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion. Although I do happen to disagree with that guys very much...ha! And I also agree with Dio that there is way to much hating on others going on. Being a very live and let person, not to mention one who does not like to be told what to do....I always get irritated with those who feel it their right or place to dictate things to others.

I did use the article to reflect on whether I thought he might be right. But then as if by fate, I watched that episode of the Gruesomes last night and it became even more clear that Halloween decorating is no different than any other art in that it is completely subjective, and always at the mercy of individual interpretation. Amusingly, the Gruesomes thought everyone ELSE was weird because they weren't creepy like them...ha! I used to think that too until I started this blog...then I realized that there were lots of other 'delightfully wretched' Halloween lovers out there besides me. And now I am just grateful that Mr. Greenberg doesn't live in my neighborhood! :o)

First off, I love the Gruesomes!!! They were the Addams family of the Stone Age, lol!
next, if I want to leave my Halloween decorations up all year long, it's my right, just as it is this guys right to his opinion and voice.

Glad he doesn't live in my neighbourhood.

This guy reminds me of Mr. Kreeg from Trick 'r Treat. Hey, I understand not "overdoing" it by putting your decorations up in mid-July, but October 1st? That's the PERFECT time for it, IMHO.

As for it being an "act of agression" against the neighborhood...that's just dumb! I put my decorations up to spread the Halloween spirit around, and for the most part that is exactly what happens. Sure, there is always one or two folks who grimace as they walk by, but those folks don't like Halloween to begin with...and ultimately, I ain't doing this for them! The overwhelming majority of folks that walk or drive by seem excited and overjoyed to see my yard haunt!

A few years back, when I'd first moved into my home, I was out putting up my decorations when a car drove by. A kid was hanging out the window, yelling to the other passengers in the vehicle "omigosh! Look at that! Awesome!". That kid, and every person like him, is who I do my yard haunt for!

So Mr. Greenburg, you have a right to your opinion, but we all have a right to completely ignore your sad, Scrooge-like attitude. I feel sorry for you, as your inner-child has obviously died long ago. You can continue to live your soul-less, boring suburban drudgery, and we'll continue to be grateful that we aren't your neighbors!

Boo on the Halloween Nazi.
I put up with all the christmas stuff with smile and enjoy it even though I am a pagan. If someone wishes me a happy hannakkuh, I don't bah humbug them because I am not jewish, I accept it in the spirit it was meant- cheer. Is Halloween any different? Accept it in the spirit it is meant fun and celebration.

I giggled when you mentioned the looks you get at the checkout line in August with your Halloween stuff. I know what that's like.

But I couldn't give a lick about crabby humbugs and their lawn-ornament 'rules.' Whatever. Neighbourhood aggression? Only toward the Grinch! Let his eyes bleed when he sees my foam-tombstone graveyard. Mwahahahaha!

Great response Gill, and I agree we do it not just for ourselves, but for the kids. So that they will remember it as fondly as we do! :o)

Nice to meet you Lurlene! :o)
