"Ring the bell, open the book, light the candle."
It's October, and when October rolls around...I start slowly working my way through my favorite Hallowe'en movies. And although I enjoy a lot of different types of Halloween movies...I do think I like 'Witch' movies best of all. What can I say, they just resonate with me. So one of my favorite 'Witch' movies to watch at Halloween is a 'Vintage Witch' movie. Yep, 50+ years 'vintage' to be exact. A friend of mine said that for her, it's more of a Christmas movie because it's set in the Winter around Christmas time. But for me, it's still a Halloween movie for the mere fact, that it has a wonderfully magical Witch in it.
Maybe you've heard of it? It's the 1958 movie, "Bell, Book and Candle", starring the ultra lovely and beguiling Kim Novak as Gillian, along side Jimmy Stewart and Jack Lemmon. The basic synopsis is that "a modern-day witch likes her neighbor but despises his fiancee, so she enchants him to love her instead... only to fall in love with him for real." And she is aided in her enchantments by the feline star of the show, Pyewacket. Pyewacket is Gillian's Siamese familiar who helps her perform all of her 'not so evil' bidding.
Now Pyewacket is an unusual name for a cat, don't you think? But it turns out to be sourced from something 'Witchy' indeed. Pyewacket was one of the familiar spirits of a witch, detected by the self-proclaimed "Witchfinder General", Matthew Hopkins, in March of 1644, in the town of Maningtree, Essex, UK. This was during the heightened times of the Witch Hunts in Europe. He claims to have overheard a coven of witches discussing their pact with the Devil. So upon torturing one of the women through sleep deprivation, she not only confessed, but also named her 'familiars.'
And as it turns out, one of those familiars was named 'Pyewacket'! Although, it's not ascertained whether Pyewacket was actually a cat or not however. But the witch hunts and prosecutions led by Matthew Hopkins were chronicled in a 1647 published pamphlet titled, "The Discovery of Witches". (which can be read by clicking on the link) So it turns out that 'Pyewacket' may very well have been a true 'witches familiar' after all.
And now, since it's officially Hallowe'en month, and because I enjoy spreading Hallowe'en magic...I purchased a new copy of "Bell, Book & Candle" for one of my October Give-Aways. I'm sure there will be many of you who've already seen this movie. But surely there are a few out there who haven't seen or heard of it before now, and who might genuinely like to win a free DVD copy. So here are the rules. Please only throw your name into my witch's cauldron if you have NOT seen the movie before, but would really like too. And that's it...nothing too spooky. Just leave a comment saying you'd like to be entered. Previous winners of other Halloween Tree Blog Give-Aways are welcome to participate, as long as you don't already own the movie, and haven't seen it yet. Someone in my house will draw the name of the winner from my cauldron on Tuesday, and your 'Bewitching' new 'retro' video will be mailed out as soon as the winner emails me with a mailing address. I want to send it out early in the month!

This was a great movie! I think I saw it for my first time a year or two ago after a friend recommended it. I can see why you want to share it with others!!
The most memorable part is when she's petting her cat and the picture zooms in on her eyes poised directly above the cat's head and all you can see is her face and the cat's face meshed together as one!! Just beautiful!!
BTW - I came here from "Out of the Shadows" and I'm glad to have found you. I'm following!!
I never knew Stewart and Novak were both in this movie. Cool. They were great in Vertigo. - SBC
Great movie, have seen it a few times on TCM. Fun stuff!
BB&C is a great one! Early congratulations to whomever is lucky enough to discover this vintage gem.
I already have a copy so I'm not entering the drawing, but I had to comment.
Yeah, this is a Christmas movie for me. BUT, I love it! I've been working on a drawing of Gill, Nicky & Queenie for about two years. Some day I'll finish it and it will be part of my Christmas holiday postings.
I know you like witches, and if you have Netflix streaming, I would recommend a movie called 'Burn Witch Burn' from 1962. It's not available on DVD, so I'm glad that NF is offering it through streaming. I watched it for the first time earlier this year and I'm probably going to watch it again soon! I thought it was really good.
I have seen this movie so don't throw my name into the cauldron. I just wanted to stop by and say what a fabulous choice for a give-away. Good luck to everyone.
Blessings.
Love this old movie!!! I haven't seen it in a few years so must rent it if I can find it, or find it at the library...I'm sure they have it.
Interesting history lesson on Pyewacket today Wendy...funny for me cuz I have a girlfriend whose nickname is the very same...she's a biker and hasn't a clue I'm sure. Life is funny isn't it?
Good luck to the person who wins this!
Radiant Blessings Wendy!
xoxoxo
I've never seen this one, I'll have to check it out! Great blog title by the way, Bradbury is my favorite author!
Yeah...I was worried that we being a motley group of Halloween misfits, there might be no one to enter who HASN'T seen it! Drats! Hopefully someone will venture this way who hasn't seen it yet. If any of you who have, know anyone who hasn't....then tell them to get their spooky lil' behinds over here and throw their name in. I always add a few extra goodies!
And if I can't find someone who hasn't seen it, then how about anyone who doesn't own a copy but would like to?! I have a copy too, so this one has to find a home. Akasa Wolf Song might get a copy by default, so she won't have to rent it at the library. :o)
I just found your blog through Candy Corn Chronicles. I am following you now! I would love to be concidered in your giveway. I have never heard of this movie..I do love Halloween movies and would love to add this to my little collection. Could you tell me where it can be purchased? I just love Siamase cats.
James Stewart in a spooky comedy? I'd love to see it but as 1)I live in the UK where this DVD cannot be read and 2)I already won something recently, I will not enter this Give-Away.
Looks like a great movie, would love to check it out!
Well....I can't put my name in the cauldron because I have seen this movie many times. It's a favorite of mine too....but I don't have my own copy of it.
Well we are getting a little closer. I think there are at least one or two of you who haven't seen it, and a couple of you who have, but don't own a copy! That's what I'm hoping for...either neophytes or those who don't currently own a copy, but love the movie! Maybe a few more newbies will venture this way by Tue.....if not, things are looking for you few...ha!
PS...Nice to meet you Lil' Dreamer, Ghost, Atom Kid, Deb S. and Wren! Happy October month to you all! :o)
This movie has long been on my list of "movies-I-really-want-to-see-but-never-seem-to-get-around-to-it". So I am throwing my name into the cauldron.
I'd like my name to be entered in your drawing. I saw the name of this movie in another blog a couple of weeks ago, and I planned on renting the movie soon since I've never seen it. I like old movies and I like Jimmy Stewart.
I enjoy reading your blog!
I haven't seen that movie in years, will look for it on TCM this month. Old movies seem to be the best in my opinion.
Hugs,
Victoria
How purrfect! Put my name in the cauldron, please! I'd love to watch it with a friend or two. Thanks! :)
Just read the "Discovery of Witches" you linked to. The old English takes you right back to that incredibly superstitious time in history. Pity the poor, uneducated woman who may bear an unusual mark on her body. Her outcome was most likely torture and hanging to satisfy the witch hunters. A fascinating read!
Never seen, sounds good, never knew Jimmy was a movie like this, learn something new everyday. So I would love to place my name in, thanks.
