Halloween Addict

"Hi, my name is Wendy and I'm an addict.....a Halloween Addict!"
Oh Happy Day! Today is a happy day and do you know why? Because all 4 local HomeGoods stores have begun putting out their Halloween merchandise. I know there's still a lot more to arrive over the coming weeks of course, but I FINALLY got my fix.

So I did pick up a few things like a cool ceramic Jack O'Lantern for starters. They have a lot of really neat Venetian Halloween Masks made in Italy. Pier 1 had some nice ones last year and I got a great Witch one that hangs permanently on my mirror over my dresser. And I just picked up a pretty purple hand-held Crescent Moon Mask tonight! I also ran into a Michael's with 4 minutes til' close and they had a full section of Halloween stuff finally. However I was accosted by a sinister snarling mad-man mean store clerk, who came by and tried to shoo me out the door claiming they were closed. Of course I argued with him that I still had 4 minutes to look, (which I did dang it), but he belligerently insisted that they were closed. So I cursed him under my breath, or put a little curse on him, I forget which.....and quickly tried to scan the inventory really fast. However, I couldn't ascertain if there was anything that I hadn't seen before or couldn't live without. I must now go back.

I can also report on 2 more items. I did check out the Cracker Barrel and they were stocked up with lots of Halloween/Fall goodies. Thank you to Jennifer at All That Glitters for the 411 on that! I also found the 1st Fall magazine...'Celebrate Fall with Phyllis Hoffman'. This was the first seasonal mag I found last year too, and I really liked it. So when I saw the crisp new stack of them on the shelf, I grabbed it excitedly and was going to buy it sight unseen. But at the last second, I decided to take a little sneak peek inside and found that I didn't like it at all. I was so disappointed. Boo Hiss! There was nothing Halloween related in it at all, and it was mostly food and recipes. I think her operating budget must have dwindled since last year. So I did not even buy it. I must now wait for Martha Stewart, Country Home and the Fall Somerset mags to arrive. Of course what I would really love to get my slimy lil' hands on are these wonderful vintage 'Dennison Party Magazine and Bogie Books'. Don't you just totally dig those vintage Halloween graphics? But sadly these go for a lot of $$$ nowadays and are hard to come by unless you want to pay a fortune for them on E-bay. For some background info on these swell books, check out Mr. Macabre's post on the Dennison books.

Oh....and I also should mention that I received my 'Fall Sneak Peek Victorian Trading Co.' catalog in the mail and there are lots of spooktacular items in there. And they are far superior to what I've seen thus far in the stores. So if you don't already subscribe to this catalog, I would if I were you! I may have to do most of my purchasing on-line and through catalogs this year if things keep going the way they are. Or maybe I've just been around enough Halloweens by now that it's hard to impress me anymore...not sure. But if you have HomeGoods stores in your area...go check them out! And I hope everyone has a great weekend.

I've been haunting our Michaels store as well as the others for Halloween goodies. I had Phyllis' book in my cold cadaverous clutches and like you, looked through it and went MEH! More like 'Celebrate Bla Harvest Decorations with Phyllis'.
LOL! Yes, vile, evil minds do think alike, I haven't seen those Bogie Books you posted, now DO WANT!
EEK!!! Gotta go, I forgot you mentioned Victorian Trading Company had their Halloween stuff out!

Well I must say that I usually always love the stuff at Home Goods the best, followed by Target. But even Target hasn't been impressing me much as it did in the past. Sometimes I wonder if it's just all been done before. But on the same token, I never tire of looking at ANY Halloween, so I only complain about it not getting out soon enough. And by the looks of your posts I'd say I'm not the only one who's discovered the charms of the HomeGoods stores! :o) Oh...and sorry Rue...but your trip will be well worth it if you find some goodies right?! :o)

Victorian Trading Company, where have you been all my life?????

We don't have a HomeGoods store around here, but I am definitely swooning over some of the items on the VTC site! Thanks for the heads up on this!

I too had Phyllis Hoffman's magazine in my hands and put it down. Too much "Harvest", too little "Halloween". Even I have my standards :)

Unfortunately, I'm in England where Halloween isn't really "done". Never mind. That's why I keep a Halloween blog and follow like-minded blogs like THT! Those magazines are wonderful. I'd love to have the chance to look through one.

Jennifer, I forgot about Yankee Candle. I mean I saw some at HomeGoods, but I didn't think about hitting up the Yankee Candle store at the mall. They had some really cute Owl votive holders last year. Thanks for another great tip.

And yes Stephanie...the VTC is the best. I like Halloween things that have a more 'real' feel to them anyway so their stuff is right up my ally.

And to the rest of you who don't have HomeGoods stores, I give you my heartfelt condolences because it really is my favorite place. Looking forward to more coming out at the days progress! :o)

I love those images you put on this post. I am getting into a Halloween mood, even though it is back into summery weather today. It is still August, the beginning of harvest time and Halloween is closely linked to harvest. Not so long ago (well ten years ago), my brothers, friends and I were playing the "Call of Cthulhu" role playing game, which always put me in a horror mood.

Now I will start reading horror stories as early as late August if I plan things correctly. I will be in Brittany soon, which is the most Celtic place in France and is full of ghost stories and eeerie folklore.

I had never been to Homegoods for Halloween merch until a few days ago and I was amazed. I picked up two of their venetian masks and will probably go back for more in another week. I also loved their lanterns!

Guillaume, if Brittany is the most Celtic place in France then I bet it would be one of my favorite places to visit. Take lots of photos to share PLEASE!

And Josie...weren't those masks great?! I will probably end up getting another one before the month is up too. I love masks! :o)

Went to Michael's this weekend...only to find very few items out (oddly enough, they had a whole section of THANKSGIVING items!!!). Fortunately, as we were leaving, two ladies blocked off the aisles and rolled out two giant carts with boxes...all marked with Halloween!!! Can't wait to go back and see what they were stocking!!!

Hey, I think if you look on Amazon, you can buy reproduction versions of those Dennison's if you're really desperate for one.
