Must be the Season of the Witch!

Well it seems that Twilight has now finally faded away into the darkness...both literally and figuratively, and thank goodness for that!  Those pesky, angsty, sparkling wannabes they call 'Vampires' are finally out of our hair for good, and just in time for the 'Damsels of Darkness' to begin their reign.  Yep, there has most definitely been something brewin' the last few years with a noticeable increase this past year specifically....must be the 'Season of the Witch!  The last few years we've slowly witnessed a changing of the 'Occult Guard', so to speak.  Has anyone else noticed the unusual uptick in all things 'Witchy' this past year?  Well I have, and I do believe that Witches and Wizards are not only on trend this year specifically....but they are manifesting in the public psyche everywhere.  Yeah, Vampires are so yesterday....

But why Witches?  And why now?  In fact, all things of a supernatural bent seem to be gaining traction in America, and abroad.  But what of Witches in particular?  As an example of just how mainstream Witches and Wizards, (both good and bad) have become....
I present the sudden uptick of recent Witch/Wizard related TV programming:
1.)  Witches of East End
2.)  American Horror Story - Coven
3.)  Salem
4.)  Sleepy Hollow
5.)  The Originals
6.)  Vikings
7.)  The Good Witch's Charm (Hallmark Channel 2012)
8.)  The Good Witch's Destiny (Hallmark Channel 2013)
9.)  The Good Witch's Wonder (Hallmark Channel 2014)
10.)  The Good Witch Television Series (Hallmark Channel Debut 2015)
The Witches of Salem
American Horror Story - Coven
The Good Witch - Cassie Nightingale

The Beauchamp Family - The Witches of East End

And Witch themed Movies or Movies featuring Witches / Sorcery:
1.)  Harry Potter Series (Obviously, although not recent)
2.)  Oz the Great and Powerful - 2013
3.)  Brave (Disney - 2012)
4.)  Hansel and Gretel - Witch Hunters - 2013
5.)  The Lords of Salem (Rob Zombie - 2012)
6.)  Frozen (Disney - 2013)
7.)  Maleficent (Disney - 2014)
8.)  The Hobbit (2012, 2013, 2014)
9.)  The Conjuring - 2013
10.) Into the Woods - 2014
11.) The Bell Witch - 2013

Evanora, The Wicked Witch of the West - Oz the Great and Powerful
Maleficent
Gandalf the Grey - Lord of the Rings

And as if the Witches weren't already flying mainstream enough, it seems they've sparked a fashion trend as well. On the runways for 2014 you'll find a decidedly Witchy influence in the fashion offerings of designers such as:
1.)  Gareth Pugh
2.)  Anne Demeulemeester
3.)  Cushnie Et Ochs
4.)  Elie Saab
5.)  Yves St. Laurent

So what do you make of all of this Hocus Pocus? Do we find ourselves here in America, in the midst of a bonafide uprising of Witchcraft?  Or is the archetypal Witch just the Occult Symbol du Jour, destined to soon be replaced in the mainstream consciousness with the next Supernatural Superstar?  And if Vampires are just 'so yesterday', and Witches begin flying off our cultural radar again....what will be next to capture our fascination....could the 'Zombie Apocalypse' be just around the corner?

2014 Halloween Industry Forcast & Trends

So I stumbled upon this Halloween Industry Magazine on-line that talks all about everything Halloween related for the upcoming 2014 season.  It touches on all the latest trends to look forward to in everything from costumes, make-up and accessories, to party decorations and outside yard haunt decor.  There is a palpable excitement brewing for the upcoming Halloween season this year due to the fact that Halloween will finally be falling on a Friday again for the first time in awhile.  A Friday Halloween equates into ever-more Halloween sales of all kinds because kids and adults alike will be able to extend their partying through the weekend....no school the next day for all the little ghouls and goblins coming down from their candy binges, and no work for the adults hungover from their creepy cocktails.  For that matter, a true Halloween Head could theoretically host an All Hallow's Eve Soiree on Friday night, followed up by a Dia de los Muertos Fiesta on Saturday or Sunday!

Dia de los Muertos Increasing in Popularity
So just what do the experts predict will be popular this year?  In costumes it seems that DIY (do it yourself) costumes have grown in popularity, probably thanks to sites like Pinterest and Etsy.  So with that, comes a desire for accessories to add to and complete a one of a kind  ensemble, rather than a ready made store bought costume that can only be worn once.  Accessories can be mixed and matched for use with other costumes and even regular outfits, as well as being used again at Renn Faires and theme parties, and for Cosplay and Larping. Licensed characters are always popular, but research has shown that buyers want more quality in their costume pieces and are also prone to mix and match styles and themes like "mixing a fantasy anime wig with vampire fangs and 60's fishnet stockings to make a unique costume."  And..........love em' or hate em', pet costumes are big, with 14% of 2013 celebrants dressing up their pets last year to the tune of $330 million dollars!!!  Wow...who would have guessed that?

Halloween Costumes for Pets is Big Business for Retailers
This coming Fall, many indoor Halloween Parties will be hosted in the 2 weeks leading up to Halloween....so what themes are retailers looking to stock for 2014?  Well as to be expected, the tried and true colors of Orange and Black, along with Purple and Lime, are always the most popular colors.  And as for 'Icons', apparently Cats came in on top in one analysis, followed closely by Bats, Pumpkins and Owls.  Vintage Halloween is always a favorite decorating style and for good reason I'd say.  And although Ghosts and Pumpkins are also perennial faves, the industry experts have seen an uptick in Skulls and Skeleton imagery on the rise.  However, there was also an alternate opinion...that many people dislike frightening imagery, so the retailer in that market was opting for a softer look in their party goods.  What about you all....are you hard core or soft core Halloween Heads?

Another hot trend, that I personally LOVE, is the Day of the Dead decor!  However according to industry experts, it tends to be more of a 'regional' trend with those on the West Coast and East Coast digging it more than those in the MidWest.  And apparently those of us who like it, also enjoy it as a year round aesthetic...thus making it a good seller in those areas all through the year. (I can personally attest to leaving some of my Sugar Skull stuff out year round in moderation.)  They also report that the Goth theme of Black and White is popular in costumes, thereby influencing its popularity in the party good sector as party-goes want to match the theme of their shin-digs.  They identified Zombies as a growing trend, with Witches, Tombstones, and Spiders good sellers as well. And lastly, anything 'Glittered" also sells well, much to the dismay and horror of the true die hard Halloween aficionados.

So there you have it....a synopsis of some of the tantalizing tricks and treats headed our way this Halloween Season.  So the big question is....what are YOU gonna be for Halloween this year?  Will you follow the trends or start a new fad?!  If you'd like to read more Halloween Industry Trend news, check out this link to Selling Halloween!

Trick or Treat - Give Us Something Good to Eat!

Trick or Treat!
Give Us Something Good to Eat
So with the big day soon approaching, it seems as good a time as any for a Halloween Candy Etiquette Primer. There is no doubt that Trick or Treating for Candy is by far one of the best parts of Halloween for both kids and adults alike. Most of us began our Halloween experience on the 'Receiving' end. We were dressed up in funny or creepy costumes, and taken door to door to strangers houses to beg for treats.....and this somehow magically made good sense to us and to our parents. If you were lucky enough to have parental units such as these, who indulged you in this yearly ritual....then please take a moment to sit in silent reflection and gratitude at being the offspring of such fun-loving and cool parents (like this Dad below)!!Alas, time marches on, and after many Moons have waxed and waned....you one day awaken to find yourself on the 'Giving' end of the Trick or Treating Exchange. You've finally grown up....or not in many cases! And you may now have kiddies of your own, or just be too old and gray to pass yourself off any longer as a child...and thus, the right of passage takes place. You spend your first Halloween gearing up to receive Trick or Treaters, and thus pass on the torch of 'Halloween Spirit'! If you are a REALLY cool and fun adult, you will also of course decorate your house inside and out, and don a costume of your own as you pass out the goods to the next generation. But your biggest decision will be....What Candy Do I Give? And this is where an honest assessment is in order. We must ask ourselves these questions? What did I LOVE to get in my sack when I was a young Trick or Treater? What did I LOATHE to get in my sack when I was a young Trick or Treater? What do the kids today want to get in their sacks? What kind of Halloween Legacy do I wish to leave behind?

These are important questions! Now it's true that the first two questions would seemingly be a matter of opinion. However, there is actual research (albeit highly unscientific) that shows that there are indeed a few 'universal items' that fall in each list. But let's begin with the LOATHE list, shall we? And let's first apply lessons we've learned from Charlie Brown & The Great Pumpkin many years ago that still apply today. Kids prefer Candy to Toys and Trinkets....and Rocks! It's the one and only day of the year that people are willing to give you gobs of FREE CANDY that your parents won't let you have any other time. So it's
a no-brainer that Candy wins out!Toys might seem like a valid alternative, but save the toys for party favors. And don't even think about any Fruit, lest you wish for reprisals later in the evening! That of course means Apples, but also includes Raisins; according to surveys. Fruit is just too risky, and good parents would just throw it away, so it's also a waste of money. Well-intentioned, utilitarian objects are also a no-no! Such items as books, pencils, fast food coupons and toothbrushes, while indeed useful....will only be met with utter disappointment, and will forever seal your fate as the worst house on the block! You will evermore have to endure The Scarlet Letter of Halloween Shame....UnCoolness! That is NOT the legacy you want to leave is it?! Of course not! So what DO kids want today? Do they love the same things you loved as a child?Maybe....maybe not! Unscientific research presents us with the following considerations...1.) Kids unanimously detest receiving boxes of raisins...but then we already ascertained that. 2.) The 'Sweet and Tart' group of candy items also ranked at the low end of the scale, with the most favorable showing in that class being Starburst. 3.) The 'Chocolate' category always ranks high, and oft times is the clear winner. This group includes all the perennial favorites such as Reeses, Hersheys, Twix, Snickers, Kit Kat, etc. 4.) When it comes to 'Chocolate', kids tend to prefer Milk over Dark....so save the dark for the adults. 5.) Also keep in mind that one big benefit of Chocolate to Trick or Treaters', is its high currency bartering rate in the Post Trick or Treating Candy Exchanges that occur later in the evening. 6.) In a surprise upset back in 2001, the 'Gummi' group actually won out in non-official testing. This group includes many things that are popular today, but probably weren't around when you were young, like Gummi Worms, Creepy Peepers, Twizzlers, Dots, Mike &Ikes, Crabby Patties, etc. 7.) There were also some specific items that ranked consistently low on the scale, which may seem surprising, like Laffy Taffy, Tootsie Rolls and DumDum pops. Those who dissed the DumDums wanted 'real' suckers instead. And last but not least...8.) In what almost constitutes 'legal slander', Candy Corn, the poster child of Halloween Candy, was insultingly relegated to being the "fruit cake of Halloween, it never goes away!" {Gasp} {Truth hurts!}
So there you have it....the informative low-down for In-the Know, Halloween Treat Givers! Choose your currency carefully, and put yourself in the shoes of the Trick or Treaters, for it wasn't so long ago that you were on the receiving end of that big Candy Bucket. Go forth and spread the Halloween Spirit while paying keen attention to the Legacy you will leave behind for other Halloween Enthusiasts through the decades! :o)

Halloween Trends 2011

So Halloween is fast approaching and if you're like me, you are wondering what FANGtastic things are gonna hit the stores this year. Or maybe you have a favorite icon of Halloween, and you can't wait to see this year's unique interpretations of it. My favorite icons are the Witch, the Owl and the Black Cat of course!
So what will be the hot trend in costumes this year? Any guesses? Well I did a little research on the 2011 Halloween trends, and here is an incomplete list of what I managed to unearth. A little consumer sneak peak at what we can expect in the days ahe
ad....
1. Halloween should continue to be a strong market for retailers. However I did learn something interesting that confirmed my observations from 2010. It seemed to me and others, that the Halloween merchandise took longer than normal to make it to the store shelves last year. Apparently that wasn't just our imagination, as retailers have found that the season begins slowly and builds to a fever pitch several days before All Hallow's Eve. Therefore, this coming year we may see stores having lighter inventory in the early days, but getting in more bulk as the month of October progresses. In fact, I read that the shopping season will become more condensed, as the last 5 days will account for 50% of total sales for the whole Halloween season. Wow...really? Well I don't want it condensed, I want it expanded dang it!

2. The Halloween trends and products we should be seeing more of this upcoming season include my favorite the 'Owl', as well as the continued popularity of all things 'Vampire'. 'Steampunk' may also begin to make it mainstream this year which I would love to see happen. Also expect to see 'Shocktails' for adult parties, and more floor to ceiling 'Scene Setters' to transform your party pad into something eerie and other-worldly.
3. The news may not be that great for those of you who love 'gore' however! The experts say that Halloween merchandise is moving away from the 'grotesque' and trending towards the 'cute' and 'fun'. A little fact that I found particularly interesting was that this trend is greatest in the warmer states, ie the South. Obviously that includes me, and several of you all as well. So why might that be you ask? Well apparently we just are not hard core enough I guess. The report said that retailers are 'limited' down here with the merchandise because we really don't like 'scary' stuff....so to be safe they should stick to more 'cheerful' Halloween goods down here. Ha! Really? I may not exactly love blood, but I do appreciate scary and authentic looking Halloween decor.
4. Other decorating trends are the tried and true 'Vintage' decorations we all remember and love from the days of yore. And I for one, would appreciate more items in this category. The 'Vampire' trend will offer up 'Filigree Designs' and 'Fancy Flourishes', with the 'Goth' vibe remaining popular. Also 'Retro' candy is big, as nostalgic Baby Boomers search for sweets from their past, like wax bottles and candy cigarettes.

5. Color trends will ALWAYS be dominated by the Orange and Black, and rightfully so. But we will begin to see a 'Traditional with a Twist' trend emerging in the marketplace. The nostalgic Orange and Black will be infused with new bold colors like intense blue, hot pink and purple. Now I don't know about ya'll, but I've seen a proliferation of 'glitter' in the Halloween goods the last couple of years, and I'm not 100% sure how I feel about it. I mean I do love glitter, but there is definitely nothing 'scary' about it. Maybe for a more sophisticated look perhaps? They did say to expect lots of 'Sequins' though.....hmmmm, sequined skulls and jack o'lanterns?!
6. And last, but not least are the Costume trends for 2011. As usual, movies help dictate some of those trends. And just as 'Alice In Wonderland' was big in 2010....the newest 'Pirates of the Caribbean' will make 'Pirates' popular again for 2011. Forecasters also say that vampires, zombies and werewolves will be popular. But do those ever really go out of style when you're talking about Halloween? Although the most interesting prediction was that 'Steampunk' will make it mainstream this year. In fact, they said that retailers who fail to incorporate a 'Steampunk' section into their store, will be missing a huge opportunity. Alas, the largest demographic in costume buyers are the 20-somethings, and they will be looking for retro character costumes from when they were kids. Think 'Green Hornet' and the 'Green Lantern'.

Well, that about sums it up, and it seems we have lots of great things to start looking fo
rward to as we countdown to Hallowe'en! Do any of these ideas and trends repulse or resonate with you? I personally love the whole 'Steampunk' theme...but I'm not sure the older folks will quite know what to make of kids sporting that kind of attire. Maybe it's better suited for hipper, young adult parties?!

Bloody Good Perfume???

Well just when you think you've seen it all, something comes along to prove you wrong. Let me preface this with the caveat that I love Halloween...I do! And I like many many of the stereotypical things associated with Halloween. But there are a few that I just cannot embrace, no matter how hard I may try. And frankly, I haven't tried, but so what! The two things that I really dislike the most would have to be SPIDERS and BLOOD! Okay....there you have it, I confess. Call me a wuss, call me a Halloween-Lite if you will, but I just cannot stomach them! But none-the-less, this post is going to be about blood....sort of.

Not only do I detest the sight and smell of blood, but I absolutely hate, despise, and abhor.....the taste of it. Needless to say, I could NEVER be a Vampire, an EMT, Emergency Room or Blood Bank worker. Likewise, I could never perform or partake in any blood rituals or spells, and I positively cannot...put a pricked or cut finger into my mouth to stop the bleeding. In fact, if my gum bleeds just a little from flossing my teeth too hard...I feel like I will h
eave from the taste of just a tiny bit in my mouth. There is absolutely nothing that appeals to me about the life giving fluid that pumps through our veins, other than the main fact that it's what helps to keep me alive.

Hmmm....but then I read this..... "Filled with legends and meanings, blood is soaked with mystery‚ fascination and respect. It’s the most tested and studied part of the human body and it guards a multitude of secrets that reveals our inner and unique way of being."

"BLOOD CONCEPT is a private celebration of the vivid and fascinating liquid that flows in our veins. Because blood is actually the river of life."
So along comes the newest gimmick? concept in the world of Perfume....Blood Concept Fragrance. Yep, I guess it was just a matter of time, but they now have a perfume based on the concept of blood and blood types. My blood type is A+, so therefore I would wear Type A perfume to theoretically get some mystical benefit from having this fragrance meld and fuse with my own blood in some kind of visceral molecular ceremony. But what if I don't like the notes of tomato leaves, basil and anise that are found in my blood type perfume? Because honestly, I would prefer the black cherry, pomegranate and patchouli notes of the Type B. No problem, you can technically wear any of the Blood Types of course, you just might not get the same hypothetical benefits from sporting a differing Type. However, the big question on everyone's mind still remains......does this stuff actually contain blood or blood notes in it? And the answer is NO....because it is actually illegal to sell products with real human blood in them, or so I've read. So then it begs the follow up question....does it still appeal to you? Will the 'True Blood' / 'Twilight' / 'Anne Rice' fans still be interested without some real blood in there somewhere? What about the bottle; designed to look like a dropper with blood in it? Does that appeal enough to entice you to wear Blood Type Perfume? For me probably not. But if you're interested, you can check out the Blood Concept Fragrance website. It's a 'bloody' unique ad campaign if I do say so myself!

Ugly Pumpkins Cry No More

Have you ever read the children's book, "The Ugly Pumpkin"? Well the gist of the story is that a skinny square pumpkin just never seems to fit into the proverbial and literal pumpkin patch. He doesn't look the same, he's not plump and round like the others. He's sad and lonely because the other pumpkins aren't very kind to him since he isn't just like them. (So far, sounds sadly similar to real life right?) Everyone always trying to make you comply to the same old mold. Getting excluded because you dare to look different, act different, think different or like different things. Well, the 'Ugly Pumpkin' learns in the end that he was not really a pumpkin at all...no, he was in fact, a Squash! And at last....he finds where he belongs....where he feels at home, with like minds and kindred souls squash! Funny how we humans have the tendency to think 'flaws' and 'differences' are somehow less than perfect, undesirable even. But over night, the low man on the totem pole, can find himself tomorrow's top dog....or in this case, top Pumpkin! There is a phenomenon called "The Tipping Point"....if you haven't read the book of that name, then I encourage you to do so...it's a very interesting read about this very occurrence. And it would seem that the 'tipping point' has come for that 'Ugly Pumpkin'!
Yes...it is now not just acceptable, but downright desirable even to be the 'Ugly Pumpkin' in the patch....warts and all! Seems that pumpkin farmers have fought long and hard for the last 50 years to get rid of warts and breed the perfect pumpkin...plump, round and smooth. But a shift in the public psyche and perception over time has now made the 'ugly, lumpy, bumpy, warty, misshapen and odd colored pumpkin the poster child of Halloween. Why the shift in perception? What was the tipping point that made the disfigured gourd de rigueur? The commercial growth of Halloween is of course partly responsible, but would you believe that Saint Mary-Martha (Stewart), the Patron Saint of Seasonal Celebrations, also shares in the credit for this 'seedy' turn of events?
I was not in the least bit surprised....after all it was she and others of the creative, designer bent...that first started searching out those odd colored, unusual and sometimes ugly pumpkins to use in their decorating and crafts. And slowly but surely...we came around, we saw the beauty in the unusual, the grand potential of being different! Suddenly we didn't all feel compelled to be 'Star Bellied Sneetches' anymore. No, we want 'scars' upon ours!! Our pumpkins that is. Yep, these hybrid 'ugly pumpkins' with equally unflattering names like the 'Warty Knucklehead', are now all the rage....who would of thunk it?! Farmers are reporting that these hybrid seeds that once sold for $25/lb., are now going for $200/lb.! Consumers are now willing to 'shell' out the big bucks for those pumpkins that do NOT conform to the norm....the weirder and uglier, the better!
Being a big fan of ugly pumpkins myself, I fully understand this odd attraction to unusual things. I am always striving to be unique and different from those around me....thus my pumpkins are no exception to that rule. And it's about time we learn to place value on how we differ, rather than on how we conform. After all, variety is the spice of life....and thanks to us Halloween lovers (and Martha)....the pumpkin farmers are making more money and the 'Ugly Pumpkin' is the Belle of the Halloween Ball!
Click here for further reading on the emerging trend of ugly pumpkins.
