Well...I went to bed last night a 'Leo' and I woke up a 'Cancer' today! Frankly I'm in a small state of shock, much denial and a fair amount of bewilderment. This just doesn't sit right with me. I don't like 'change' very much, I'll admit it....but THIS? Most of us are now...not what we thought at all. What's your sign? (No, that's not a pick up line....(but it
this little jewel of perception changing information today....it appears that the Astrological Horoscope Signs have now changed from what we've believed them to be the last couple thousands of years.Yes we can thank our well intentioned astronomers for making this identity changing correction for us. Apparently it's all because of a scienti
fic thing called 'precession' that has been caused as a result of the earth's wobble as it rotates every year. So the slight shift each year, has over time, resulted in a subsequent shifting of the constellations that rule the zodiac. And this subtle shift, although just a one-tenth move....equates to almost a full month difference in the astrological signs themselves. So basically, most people, unless born on the cusp of their signs, are now shifted into the next sign over. So what do you think about this?I realize that not everyone places much value in 'horoscopes'. I am one of those who greatly enjoy the study of it, and find the majority of people I know to really fit the descriptions of their signs. But I also take it all with a grain of salt, as I do most everything in life. But now what? Do the attributes stay the same for the most part, and just the name changes? Or are we now supposed to view ourselves with a whole new set of traits?
In reading a few comments on the articles, I laughed as people were relieved that now they finally knew why they never fit the description of their previous sign....because they weren't really that sign at all. But then on the flip side are people like me, who feel that my sign was a pretty accurate depiction of me. However now that I think about it, there were a few things that just never did fit, although I felt the majority was right. Now I just read a Cancer horoscope and me thinks maybe that sounds sort of like me too, so what does that mean exactly? Even if it's all just a bunch of poppy-cock....I've always enjoyed it, and now they've gone and ruined it for me.
But here is the real kicker, there is also no longer just 12 signs of the zodiac. Apparently we spend some time in a 13th constellation known as Ophiuchus (better known as Serpentarius). Say what? I can't even pronounce that, but even more bothersome is the fact that it is now the new sign of my husband. This man whom I thought was a Sagittarius, is now an Ophiuchus and wth is THAT? One fac
t my Leo horoscope always mentioned was that I was most compatible with Sagittarius. What I figured out later in life when I finally read that, is that almost every boyfriend I'd had, was a Sagittarius. I never knew what their sign was when I met them, so I was just magnetically drawn towards the very sign that Astrology said I was most compatible with. There was comfort in that. But what now? Who are these strange Ophiuchus men that I have loved? Even my own Father was an Ophiuchus according to these new guidelines. I feel betrayed. The majority of my love life has been spent with some strange 'alien' men that I now know nothing about. Eeegads....I have spawned with this new Zodiac breed! What have I done? I liked the Sagittarius. I liked the front-half man / back-half horse symbol that represented it. I'd reference it when I'd tell the hubby he was acting like a horse's ass....ha! Now he is represented by a Serpent! That really doesn't sound any better to me. Does that mean that I've dated a bunch of snakes? Let's see...mysterious 13th sign, the serpent....sounds a bit nefarious.
Do you see where this going? This change....it's just not a good thing. It's too late to start all over now, sizing everybody up according to their new set of peculiar astrological attributes. I kind of liked everybody the way they were. However, I guess if I tried viewing it in a positive light...it is a chance for us all to make ourselves over....be something new and different. So how do you feel about being something different now? Do you like your old sign better or your new one? New year....new you! Who would have thought! :o)

YES!!!! I'm still a Virgo!
I feel really bad for those people who have zodiac themed tattoos...
I'm going to have to see how I feel about being a Libra now, I was such a textbook Scorpio..
I am a little weird-ed out by this - I didn't realize that I had changed - I liked being a virgo - and now (no offense) I am a leo - I was always a borderline though, and have always had some of both, but I was a proud virgo - I have to research being a full leo now - right smack in the middle instead of on the cusp.
Oh no! I am now a Libra? Anyone that knows me would guess that I am a Scorpio in a matter of minutes. This is madness I tell you!!! Just madness!
Thanks for sharing.....and tearing my world apart :D
At least I am still a Dragon...they have not changed the Chinese year assignmens, right?!?
Cheers!
I know right?!!!
This is lunacy! There must be some mistake.
And no offense taken over your reluctance to now be a Leo. It was always the negative attributes of the sign that didn't fit me well. But the negative ones of the Cancer do seem a much better match. But my Virgo friends are all so very similar in their particular idiosyncrasies that I can't fathom them being Leos. It's all just too much...I refuse to abide this. If it ain't broken then no need to fix it...ha!
I say bollocks! I was born a Leo and will remain a Leo!
According to the chart I jump back two signs and am my ascendant. Nope, I spent 53 years as a Scorpio Moon and Sun and Virgo Ascendant and that is how I shall stay. Perhaps, the generations coming after but I don't think it will catch on so well. I mean we still keep the ruling planet of Pluto and that is not a planet anymore. Hugs and sparkles - WG
Well I'm not feeling like I'm a Libra! Being a Scorpio has always suited me. I'm wondering about my Moon Sign now too. I was a Leo Moon which makes sense to me. Hum...now what?
Oh and Happy New Year too!
I don't care! I refuse to be a Gemini. I am a classic Cancer. I hate change :(
Victoria ♥
I had no idea this had happened! YIKES!!
Who came up with this madness?!?
I used to be a Sagittarius....But now {{shudder}} I'm a....a....Ophiuchus!
I just checked out the Gemini traits and there is just no way that's me. I don't fit any of those traits. I'm a Cancer through and through no matter what the crazy people say. This is too weird.
I'm a Leo now? Nope, I refuse. Once a Virgo, always a Virgo.
I've always been a full-on Virgo. No way am I changing!
I read an article from a prominent astrologer, and he basically dismissed this. He explained that Astologers are quite aware of the shift of the constellations, and take that into account when they make their charts. He also dismissed the "new" sign, saying that the Babylonians were aware of it, but it didn't correspond with the 12 month cycles so they folded it into the other signs.
I personally have a bit of a Jungian belief regarding astrology. Jung believed that it wasn't the stars so much as it was a mass-conciousness belief. In other words, enough people believed in it until it became a part of the collective unconciousness, thus shaping people's personalities and perceptions along those lines. With that in mind, then it wouldn't matter at all if astronomers tried to shift these around, as our perceptions are already established along the previous model. I don't know if that makes any sense outside of my own head, but the general gist is this: you are still your previous sign because of your previous beliefs around that sign.
phew - I feel better, just found this - I am staying a virgo -

deep breathes - happiness!
Gill I do understand what you're saying completely, and it's my belief that mass consciousness effects many many happenings in the world, but that's another blog...ha! And yes, I too read several reports that basically said this has been debated for quite a long time actually. But astrologers for the most part aren't too keen on adopting it....and why would be they be really. It throws their whole agenda out of whack entirely to change it now.
However on the point of Ophiuchus, I did read that it has always been known that this 13th constellation is there, and that it is true that we do rotate through it between Scorpio and Sagittarius. However, way back when astrology took root, they decided to omit it because it was only like 15-18 days that we were in that constellation so they just left it out. But we do rotate through it, so I'm not sure why they chose to ignore it.
Acutally, I did read a fun 'conspiracy theory' account of the mysterious 13th sign Ophiuchus and it's relation to the fall of Lucifer, the Illuminati and the 33rd degree Masons. Here's the link:

Man how I love a good conspiracy theory! :o)
With all that being said however...judging by the responses here and my own thoughts on the matter, most people who are inclined to care about horoscopes anyway...are more than happy with their current signs and do NOT care to change anyway.
Maybe not . . .

Delightful and insightful post, Wendy!
Hmmmm, I dated a few snakes in my younger years. .I wonder what their birthdates were. . .
I am and will always be a pisces. No way will I ever be an aries or a aquarius. I will always be a pisces no matter what!
I am SO not a Libra...not not not.
Now, had it jumped forward....I am very Sag-like, but then all 4 of my personal planets are in Sag, so that's not surprising.
My husband is SO not a Libra, either. More so than me, perhaps, and God knows he can't make up his mind when faced with too many options, but he is a stereotypical Scorpio right down to his....toes.
This Crab is NOT a Twin. Gemini? I think not.
I have to say that I will remain a Libra....I was born a Libra and will stay a Libra....maybe the "New Zodiac" can be for people that are born into it now....but not for those of us born into the "Old Zodiac"....how about that? That seems fair to me.
